Solution To Beach Littering Solution Research - 1925 Words

Solution To Beach Littering Solution Research (Essay Sample) Content: Beach Littering SolutionsBeach littering by people is becoming a major global concern as litter in beaches continue to rise (Tjell 863). The main types of litter found on beaches include plastic materials, cigarette butts, glass beverage bottles, beverage cans, paper bags, caps or lids and food wrapper materials. These materials are disposed of by people as they go to the beaches for leisure or during the summer when the weather is favorable. Litter from beaches has far reaching adverse social and economic effects on human beings. The litter also affects the lives of animal species in the seas and oceans leading to death and extinction of some. A study on beach water conducted in 2007 by MCs found out that volunteers collected approximately 346,000 items. More so, an average of more than 2,000 bits of litter or two bits of rubbish was collected on a 168.5 km coastal stretch (Schultz et al. 37). The litter dumped on beaches can injure or harm people as well as damaging the aesthetic beauty of the environment. In another study, Torgler, Frey, and Wilson note that about 100,000 turtles and marine mammals are killed by plastic litter swept from beaches (n p). The following measures can be used to curb the littering menace caused by people on beaches.Fines and penalties should be imposed on individuals who dispose waste materials on the beach (Gerace n p). This approach makes it less appropriate for people to feel "okay" when throwing litter anyhow. Larger fines would mean more revenue to the government which plays a vital role in enforcing litter management policies. The amount of fines and penalties imposed should vary depending on the amount and type of waste disposed of. For instance, the weight or volume of waste is used to determine the severity of the penalty in ten states in the United States (Mangone 454). The amount charged should also vary depending on the number of times the individual has committed the crime. The fine charged for first -time conviction in Alabama is $ 250 while subsequent convictions attract a fine of $ 500 (Mangone 455).In addition to imposing fines and penalties, this policy should be accompanied by serving a jail term for severe cases (Tjell 864). People who are found disposing more litter and at a high frequency should be subjected to more than financial implications. Minor cases face less jail term while severe cases face more jail term with an addition of penalties. For instance, in Massachusetts, first-time violators are fined $5,500 while subsequent convictions attract up to $15,000. The violators may also be required by the court to remove the litter at their expense. Fifty percent of the imposed fine is saved for the conservation trust. A driver arrested for this offense faces up to seven days of suspension (Mangone 456).In the event of mass littering, individuals who commit the offense should be personally liable for any cost incurred in cleaning the litter. This requirement should cove r any financial cost incurred in removing the litter as well as any foregone benefit that occurs as a result of dumping litter on the beaches. This situation is more evident where individuals prefer some beaches at the expense of others which are deemed "dirty" as a result of littering. In the Michigan state, violators are required to pay for the cost of removing the litter and any property damage that arises in the process (Mangone 457).Williams and Micallef suggest that People who litter any material that poses any health hazard should face stiffer penalties and possible long-term jail terms (n p). For instance, the disposing litter of any material from a health facility is considered a misdemeanor and the violation is punishable by serving a term of up to six months and a fine of $1,000, or both. Litter that is infectious or is pathological in nature is considered a felony. This violation is punishable by incarceration of up to two years and a fine of $5,000, or both. Subsequent convictions in this state are punishable incarceration of up to five years and a fine of more than $ 10,000 (Mangone 458). Therefore, the type of litter disposed of should determine the type and severity of punishment individual faces. This way, littering any hazard waste is put under control.Banning individuals who violate beach regulations by disposing of litter presents another control measure to reduce beach pollution. The local government, as well as the beach management teams, should ensure that any individual convicted for littering the beach is banned from accessing them. This will ensure that people exercise due care when operating their business on the beach if they want to continue enjoying its benefits. Law courts and the authorities at the ground should work hand in hand to ensure that these convicts bear full responsibility for their actions (Williams and Micallef n p)Schultz also adds that people should be banned from using the non-biodegradable material on the beach (35). These materials include all plastic materials and glasses that never decompose hence become a threat to aquatic life as well as human life. The Manhattan Beach ban on plastic bags provides a great example in this case. Instead of these non-biodegradable materials, the city of Manhattan Beach persuades people to use reusable bags. The Manhattan city council banned all single-use plastic bags at all points of sale and imposed a charge for using plastic bags (Schultz 36). Huntington Beach also adopted this ordinance in 2013 and imposed a pass-through charge of ten cents for every paper bag used. Others areas to have applied these ordinances include Fort Bragg, Solana Beach, Daly City, Manhattan Beach, South Lake Tahoe and Colorado among others (Schultz 37). These ordinances help to reduce the number of paper bag waste that is found on beaches.Another solution to the littering menace is to impose compulsory cleaning by the beach community (Gerace n p). This allows the people arou nd to take beach cleaning as their responsibility and also check each other. The beach management authorities in collaboration with the local governments should set specific days for general clean up of beaches involving all members of the community. The local government should provide any necessary equipment for the activity. Items such as trash bags, pickup sticks and gloves should be purchased from fines imposed on the beach littering offenders. Repetition of this process over a period ensures that beaches are tidy throughout. For example, Rwanda has a clean and classic sandy beach known as Gisenyi at the end of Lake Kivu. The community in Rwanda is mandated to undertake a mandatory clean- up where all Rwandese participate once in a month (Karvazy and Webster n p). This way, the beach and other areas of the country remain clean. However, this move faces resistance from some people who feel that it is the responsibility of the local governments to maintain beach cleanliness.Anothe r important measure is to ensure that people do not develop structures such as tourist hotels and resorts too close to the beaches (Marine Litter Solutions n p). The construction of such structures results in littering the beaches by the waste material from them. Also, people in those hotels and lounges litter the beaches by carrying plastic materials such as fresh water and juice bottles (Marine Litter Solutions n p). Individuals, as well as hotels, should be held accountable for any litter that that results from them. This way, the hotel management would advise its customers on the right way to dispose of their litter. As a precautionary measure, they should provide litter bins for waste disposable to their customers. The local governments in areas with beaches should push for compulsory litter bins within the beaches. Any person who disposes of litter other places other than the litter bins should face severe penalties (Musereau, Jonathan and HervÃÆ' 16). The notion behind this m ove is that people are too lazy to walk their trash to available litter cans. Availing more cans scattered across the beach would induce people to take their trash to those cans hence reducing littering.Additionally, people should be forced to attend seminars and workshops conducted by beach stakeholders to educate the masses on maintaining cleanliness on the beach. Most people think they know all about beach littering and therefore feel it is unnecessary to attend such seminars. The beach management authorities should ensure that those who attend such seminars are accorded privileges when they visit the beaches (Musereau, Jonathan and HervÃÆ' 17). These added benefits would include discounted beach rides or reduced entry fees. The organizers should provide attendance cards to acknowledge those who attend such seminars and these would be needed at entry points to enjoy extra benefits.Control measures should be put in place to control litter that results from beach parties (Mangone 460). Beach parties present a threat to the beaches by acting as sources of litter. Party revelers throw away beer cans and other sorts of bottles and materials that pollute the beaches. Litter left after beach parties as raising eyebrows, especially in the UK beaches. According to a report, the beach litter in the UK rose by a third in 2016 as compared to 2015. The number of plastic bottles found on the beach rose to 43% while metal drinks can rose to 29% while lids and caps increased by 41% (Schultz 42). This increase in the litter is attributed to the frequent beach parties that usually happen during the summer. Musereau, Jonathan, and HervÃÆ' suggest that fines and penalties should be imposed on those who litter beaches during such events (19). For instance, the staff members of Ruschmeyerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s were fined for dumping litter while on their staff party on Montauk Beach in Long Island. The four members were each fined $6,000 for the...

The Pillow Method Essay Sample free essay sample

Harmonizing to Shakespear â€Å" All the world’s a phase. And average and adult females simply player† However to be a true participant you must see the phase from others perspective. The pillow method is define in the text. Looking out looking in by Ronald Adler andRusell Proctor II. as a method for understanding an issue from several positions instead than with egoistic â€Å"i’m right and you’re incorrect â€Å" attitude. The name of the theory arises from the analogy that a pillow has four sides and a in-between. merely like most issues and jobs. By looking through each side of the job and seeing each issue from each position. one should be able to happen value in another’s position. The pilow method consist of five places. The Disagreement The dissension in inquiry concerns auto pick. My brother argues that athleticss autos are far better than musculus autos because thay are designed for high velocity drive and manoeuvrability whereas I argue that normally athleticss auto have a smaller engine. We will write a custom essay sample on The Pillow Method Essay Sample or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page and better handling. They’re good for curves and crisp bends. A musculus auto is less about the expressions and more about acquiring the occupation done. It’s better for making high velocities at a consecutive line. It besides has a larger and more powerful engine. Rendering the Disagreement Harmonizing to the Pillow MethodI’M RIGHT. YOU’RE WRONG.Since I own a musculus auto ( Dodge charger R/T ) . It was easier for me to explicate to him why I was siding on the side of musculus autos. I was really confident that I was traveling to win this statement and rather frankly I think I did ( self-imposed prophesy ) . The text Looking out Looking in explains in chapter two that â€Å"self-imposed prognostications occur when your ain outlooks influence your behaviour. I besides knew that for me to show my instance decently I had to utilize Identity direction. The text Looking out Looking in defines Identity direction in chapter 2 as â€Å" the communicating strategies that people use to act upon how others view them. One of the biggest differences between a athleticss auto and a musculus auto is the engine. Muscle autos have large. powerful engines ; largely V8s or better that gives them the â€Å"muscle† in their name. Sports auto s. on the other manus. have smaller engines that might still be powerful. but more frequently than non less powerful than that of musculus autos. Muscle autos are associated with bold curves that merely make the autos look like their power is seeking to pouch out of the seams. Sports autos aren’t rather so ruffling. Alternatively. athleticss autos are normally made up of sleek likes that aren’t every bit muscle-like as their powerful opposite numbers. YOU’RE RIGHT. I’M WRONG. Mukailah 3At this point I decided to play the devil’s advocator by seting my ain sentiment to rest and take his point of position by using empathy. In chapter 3 of Looking out Looking in. Empathy is defined as â€Å"the ability to re-create another person’s position. to see the universe from the other’s point of view† . This was really difficult to make because I felt like I was beliing my ego and this made me look weak in his eyes. Nevertheless. I went through with it saying some facts. It took bravery and subject to carry through this. I stated to him that. For the most portion. athleticss autos were made to stand out around the corners. which is non a great topographic point for most musculus autos. Sports autos have been either Spartan or epicurean. but good handling. minimal weight. and high public presentation are obligatory. He stressed to me that Sports autos place the highest accent on the merriment factor. great manoeuvrability. superb handling. good braking. low weight. aeromechanicss. every bit good as acceleration and even though they frequently have smaller engines. they manage to be quick by their low weight and fast. agile managing. I emphasized the expensive care cost every bit good as burn more gas than athletics autos. BOTH RIGHT. BOTHvWRONG Ars frequently accelerate more rapidly than At this Juncture. I was more concerned about the similarities every bit good as the drawbacks of both autos. I started by stating him that. both classs of autos are fast and epicurean. They both have good grip and power potency. I besides impressed upon him that. since both autos are public presentation driven ; they are equipped with the most advanced high public presentation brakes. The public presentation of the interruptions about ever is better than those of other typical vehicles. We both agreed on this po int since public presentation autos are critiqued based on their ability to halt under peculiar sum of clip and distance it takes for it to halt. On the other manus. I started turn toing the common drawbacks. They both inherently require more care than their opposite numbers and besides due to the bigger engine size in both modern musculus and athleticss autos they consume/ burn gas faster. He stress understanding to both points without vacillation. I concluded this portion saying that both category of rich person could potentially pull high insurance premium and parts could be difficult to come by particularly since most of them are foreign autos. IT ISN’T IMPORTANT WHICH POSITION IS RIGHT OR WRONG This place was the easiest portion of the procedure because at this point we both knew and agreed on the common similarities and drawbacks of both classs of autos. I stressed the fact that our dissension was non that importance since most people can’t even acknowledge the difference between a athleticss and a musculus auto because they have so much in common. He so said that we could hold talked about more of import things such as investing chances. I giggle and said to him good. you know. that is what we were discoursing and for some ground we ended up reasoning about autos. At this point. I knew I was successful with the application of the pillow method. THERE IS TRUTH IN ALL FOUR PERSPECTIVES Normally when I’m involved in an statement with a individual. I tend to be angry with them when they refuse to understand or see things from my position and this in bend thrusts me to reciprocate the gesture. We automatically stumbled into this stage of the pillow method as a consequence of successful completion of stage 4. We both realized that our relationship as household is genuinely of import and to keep positiveness and regard for each other was overriding. We both recognized that each position had truth and virtues. which led to less concern for single ideas and shifted focal point to collective apprehension and via medias. At the terminal of the exercising. I told my brother O give me feedback on the statement that we had and he said. he felt that I handled it better than I usually do. I so professed to him that I was practising the pillow method on him. We both agreed on how this method gave us new penetration every bit good as develop empathy towards another person’s state of affairs. This method is a great manner to heighten effectual communicating. Work Cited 1. Ronald B. Adler and Russell F. Proctor II. Looking out Looking in 13th Edition. 2011 2. International market segmentation (economics, national culture and time) Essay Example

International market segmentation (economics, national culture and time) Essay International market cleavage Economicss, national civilization and clip European Journal of marketing vol. 48 No.7/8, 2014 pp. 1209-1293 We will write a custom essay sample on International market segmentation (economics, national culture and time) specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on International market segmentation (economics, national culture and time) specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on International market segmentation (economics, national culture and time) specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer In this essay I propose to critically measure the above research paper: â€Å"International market cleavage ( economic sciences, national civilization and clip ) † published late in the European Journal of Marketing. The paper aims to look into the influence, economic and cultural factors have individually and in combination over international state cleavage and besides seek to uncover the stableness of these factors and state sections over clip. Cleavage can be described as the scheme of spliting market in homogeneous group ( Goyat, 2011 ) . The growing of planetary competition has established international cleavage as a cardinal issue in developing, positioning and merchandising merchandises throughout the universe ( Ter Hofstede et al. , 1999 ) quoted by ( Budeva and Mullen, 2014 ) . International cleavage has therefore become a cardinal extension of the traditional selling construct, as deficiency of acquaintance with diverse foreign environments tends to take to generalisation of demand status in abroad market. This can organize national stereotypes. Thus a policy of cleavage will assist relieve jobs originating from such misconceptions, as it acknowledges the magnitude and relevancy of differences and similarities between foreign states. However ( Budeva and Mullen, 2014 ) suggests that if a company can accomplish competitory advantage as a consequence of planetary standardisation, a â€Å"standardization oriented approach† is in order. International cleavage besides provides a figure of advantages from the organisation point of position, one of it being that organisations find it easier to come in states in the same bunch in which they have been successful ( Budeva and Mullen, 2014 ) Therefore if one accepts this premiss, the inquiry is non whether to section the international market but when to section and how to section ( what footing for cleavage should be considered ) ( Wind and Douglas, 1972 ) . In the evaluated research paper a longitudinal analysis ( 1990-1999 ) is undertaken and as a consequence, supply an penetration into whether economic A ; cultural features change overtime. The influences of economic and cultural factors are examined individually, and so combined. The survey includes economic and cultural variables for 30 states measured at two periods ( 1990-1999 ) . The research is designed to capture the effects of state specific variables on section rank and alterations overtime to measure our hypotheses. Hypothesiss of the research are mentioned in the undermentioned paragraphs. The writer argues, when companies enter new markets research on economic development entirely can non adequately predict firm’s opportunities of success in these markets. The viability of this statement can be supported by the fact that economic development of a state is merely an index of its populations purchasing capacity and what should be the monetary value scope of the merchandises marketed in that specific state nevertheless the consumer penchants and rational/motivation behind consumer’s merchandise choice is ignored. Neither do consequences of research undertaken with lone economic development as a base can assist organisations plan or choose selling schemes for their merchandise in that market. As a consequence the success of the house can non be predicted accurately. Therefore, it is of import that alternatively of state cleavage based wholly on economic informations or wholly on cultural informations, we combine the two in general cleavage model. Therefore t he first two hypotheses are: H1 Country sections formed from purely economic variables will be different than state sections formed with purely cultural variables. H2 Country sections formed from economic and cultural variables will ensue in different sections than those formed from either economic or cultural variables entirely. The consequence of this research indicates that both hypotheses H1 and H2 are found to be true. Hypotheses1 can be confirmed as when economic factor entirely is taken into consideration USA has a different section and does non portion this section with any other state nevertheless, when civilization is made the base of cleavage USA. Is clustered with other states such as Canada, Austria, Ireland and Italy. The bunch alterations for many states included in the survey, while switching the footing of cleavage from economic factors to civilization. H2 is besides found to be true and can be confirmed by the fact that while states were evaluated individually on economic growing and civilization a 4 four section solution appeared to be most appropriate for the same set of states whereas when evaluated in combination a six bunch solution seems to be most appropriate. Besides the construction of the sections is different from solutions based merely on economic or cultural variables. Another statement made by the writer is that states differ in economic development but they are non inactive. Example of China is given to back up this statement. This statement in my point of view is really strong as explained by the writer by giving china’s illustration, that states may see rapid alterations in economic indexs such as GDP ( it jumped from 3 % in 1990 to 9 % in the undermentioned twelvemonth and once more jumped to 14 % in 1992. This statement can be verified non merely by looking at fluctuating GDP rates of China but besides of many other universe economic systems with fluctuating GDP rates such as India. The writer argues that civilization alterations as a effect of economic development, and some states develop faster than others ( Budeva and Mullen, 2014 ) . However this statement in my point of position is non wholly true as in my sentiment non merely civilization gets influenced by economic development but civilization besides influences economic development. As a state which scores high on self look in comparing to endurance will by and large hold a batch more little investors and enterprisers will be much more willing to take hazards to raise themselves to a criterion of better life thereby forcing the wheel of economic growing in that state. However a state driven by more traditional cultural values will look for safety in every investing and concern dealing they make, and as a consequence may non take appropriate timely hazards and may free out on chances to increase net income borders. In support of my statement â€Å"The extent of corruptness besides varies aggressively bet ween different states and different fiscal civilizations, and this can do profound difference to economic performance.† ( Sen, 2008 ) . Amartya sen in his article civilization and development besides talks about a great sociologist Max Webber’s thesis on the important function of Protestants moralss on in the successful development of a capitalist industrial economic system. The writer besides assumes, people will be more immune to cultural alterations than economic development the 3rd hypotheses is: H3 Changes in economic development will ensue in motion of states across sections more frequently than alterations in national civilization. The consequences of this research finds this hypotheses to be true as a seeable alteration in state bunch can be seen over the decennary based on economic development as the bases of cleavage. Shifts in state constellating with economic growing, as base is much more in comparing to constellating on the bases of civilization. The writer argues that civilization may alter easy, in incremental stairss but it does alteration. The writer argues that alteration in civilization is triggered by the economic system. In the last hypotheses of this research the writer assumes that with the economic development, civilization besides changes, and this leads to reconstituting in sections that we obtain from one period to the other, based on this the concluding hypotheses of this research is: H4 Countries that move from developing economic systems to higher income position will see cultural alterations ensuing in changed cleavage forms. The consequences of this research shows that merely two states show a displacement in state constellating based on cultural factors whereas for state constellating based on economic factors there were a batch more alterations. Thus we can state that cultural factors change really easy in comparing to economic factors. Besides the two states Czech democracy and Spain which changed state sections moved off from economically backward state and became portion of bunchs of economically advanced states illustration Spain joins the section with other European states. As these two states moved from less developed state bunch to a good developed one economically a considerable displacement can be seen in there constellating with civilization as the bunch base. This proves the above stated hypotheses. The sample used in this research paper by the writer includes states surveyed by WVS in both 1990-1991 moving ridge and 1999-2001. The initial sample covered a sum of 34 states but three of them were eliminated due to losing informations and besides west Germany and east Germany is treated as one. The sample used in my sentiment is thorough in itself and can besides be assessed by looking at the consequences of this research paper as it includes states runing variedly in economic development with gross national income ( GNI ) per capita ranging from 380 dollars ( India ) to Sweden with GNI 34,280 dollars. The sample is non merely thorough of economically varied states but besides covers a full spectrum culturally varied 1s ; it covers states all the manner from Japan and Sweden which score high on secular rational values to states like Ireland and Chile. However, one can reason though the study samples used in the WVS survey’s is big and thorough but the figure of states s a whole is little. The writer tries to warrant his pick of utilizing this little figure of states due to fiting demands across two periods and losing informations. Thus we can state that the sample used in this research paper is equal and good informed about the assorted dimensions. But it is deserving giving a idea that had the figure of states used in this research been much more than it is right now, what consequence it would had on the current findings of the research? Is at that place a possibility that some of the hypotheses in the research would hold been dismissed? From the above analysis of the research article we can state that it covers merely a little figure of states due in this research can be seen as one of the restrictions of this research. Besides as secondary beginning of information is used to transport out this research the fact that handiness of economic informations of the states is much more in comparing to the cultural informations and no specific step is present to verify whatever sum of cultural informations is available, could hold lead to some divergences in the consequences of this research matching to the usage of civilization as the base of state bunch. Besides this there is a deficiency of theoretical bases to steer the choice of variables and development of sections. And in conclusion categorization of states on the footing of state sections provides really weak indexs of marketing behaviour in a state. ( Wind and Douglas, 1972 ) . This is because every person is different and generalisation of consumers so widely on the footing of state can supply merely a glance of the expected consumer behaviour in that state. On the other manus this research has some really positive penetrations First, this research makes it possible to prove whether cultural values alter under the influence of certain environmental forces such as economic development. Second, this research piece fills the spread in old literature. The writer explains in the literature reappraisal that traditional researches on international selling cleavage have been criticized for concentrating on economic and cultural variables individually and non on both together. â€Å"a successful cleavage program must bring forth market sections which meet the four basic criteria† sustainability is one of them ( Goyat, 2011 ) . The longitudinal analysis of this research has the possible to cover the sustainability of these two factors and besides tests the kineticss of these two factors overtime. Besides this research peace examines market cleavage utilizing both these bases together and besides tries to happen a nexus between the two. Third, critically it can be stated that demographic may turn out as good bases of cleavage but the mind of the consumers play a important function in finding consumer behaviour. Something to believe about Every consumer has particular demands from the merchandises and services he/she consumes. Segmenting market every bit widely as state sections and generalising even those sections by grouping states with certain economic and cultural factors therefore poses a inquiry whether such broad cleavage would really turn out utile in guaranting an organization’s selling success? If yes, to what extent? Mentions 1. Budeva, D. , G. A ; Mullen, M. , R. 2014, International market cleavage,European Journal of Marketing, vol. 48, no. 7, pp. 1209-1238. 2.

Role of Motivation in Second Language Acquisition Research Paper

Role of Motivation in Second Language Acquisition - Research Paper Example Through a questionnaire that sought to ascertain the level of their motivation and anxiety towards English acquisition as a second language, I was able to set up the base for a formal research to examine the level of motivational and anxiety patterns as a result, of second language learning. More significantly, the subjects of the research were Saudi student who was studying English for their general academic purposes and latter use in their careers expressed dissatisfaction in their early education. More so, the students indicated that both social and psychological problems caused them difficulty when studying English as a second language in their earlier education at primary, intermediate and secondary schools for a period of seven years. Literature Review In most cases, motivation as a way of enhancing second language learning is important for an individual to acquire successfully language competence. Therefore, this section of the research gives an overview of literature that is considered relevant in establishing my research objectives. More than often, it is hard to describe the motivation because of it complex phenomenon in different facets of life. Shuib & Al-Tamimi (2009) put more emphasis on the fact that, proper motivation remains relevant among learners of a second language as a way of enhancing their language competence. More significantly, both the social and individual decisions in the degree of effort and emphasis people make, as they set their goals in second language depends on the source of motivation.... More significantly, both the social and individual decisions in the degree of effort and emphasis people make, as they set their goals in second language depends on the source of motivation. On the other hand, Ghazi et al. (2010) described the motivation as the voluntary forces that give an individual the will to develop direction, arousal, and persistence of goal-directed towards achievement of success in second language acquisition. In addition, they believe that motivation acts as a driving force that compels, energizes and prompts an individual to develop interest in a second language learning within a particular time in which focus is set on attaining a specified goal. Rubenfeld et al. (2007) describe the motivation as self-determination, which drives an individual’s motives towards their goal pursuits as inspired by either intrinsic or extrinsic aspirations. More so, the goals that drive an individual’s motive is aimed at attaining both the basic and psychological needs that later on leads to external approval and rewards (Dekker & Fischer, 2008). As a result, students undertaking English learning, as their second language in their studies derive their motivation from extrinsic goals. Even so, learners of second language could be driven by intrinsic goals as they intend to enhance their sense of belonging within the community that uses a second

Case Study and 2 General Qustion of scope management Essay

Case Study and 2 General Qustion of scope management - Essay Example Stakeholders are those individual or group that affects the business in one way or another. These include, customers, prospective customers, suppliers, Government, community among others. In our Rolls-Royce case, the stakeholders include, Airbus, Boeing, Turkey’s national airline, Government among others. You need to develop an understanding of the needs of the stakeholders. You need to understand their view about you project and how you can best attract their participation to the project. Understanding how you can communicate with them is also very important. Objective can be defined as the goals that the organization aims at achieving in the course of their business and activities. This can be reflected through mission statements, performance metrics and in situations whereby the organization keeps on reminding the employees on how crucial their work is in the organization. Strategies on the other hand are a planned action that focuses on enabling the organization to achieve its objectives. After a strategy is established, it has to be communicated to the entire organization through the top management, in order to justify it and commit the whole organization to it. An organization can have an objective of increasing the number of customers in a given period of time. For example an organization dealing with online newsletters may have an objective of increasing the number people subscribing for e-newsletter each month by 20%. Sympathy for the Devil Essay Example for Free

Sympathy for the Devil Essay The first thing that I noticed when I heard this song is how different it is from almost every other song that I have heard. The instruments used seem odd for The Rolling Stones, and rock songs in general. It starts off with a combination of drums and maracas, sounding like Brazilian samba music. Usually rock music has a 4/4 backbeat with a bass drum, but this song does not contain that attribute. There is no rhythm guitar but instead an electric bass and piano is used. The bass guitar is used to replace the rhythm guitar, lead guitarist Keith Richards also plays it, and so this may explain this. I’m going to start off by discussing the lyrics of the song and what they are about. I noticed that one of the lines â€Å"every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints† seems to suggest that the devil isn’t that bad, and that all people have some devil in them. There seems to be confusion of good and evil. The devil is portrayed as â€Å"a man of wealth and taste† and polite as well by greeting using â€Å"let me please introduce myself.† Another line, â€Å"hope you guess my name, but what’s puzzling is the nature of my game† intrigued me. This line is not the songwriter saying that I hope you guess that its me playing the devil, it means that the devil is saying I hope you can recognize me because I may be in disguise and I don’t do evil myself, I trick people into doing it for me. The difference between good and evil is a continuing theme throughout the song. Jesus Christ in mentioned and the devil says that he â€Å"stolen many a mans soul and faith.† The songwriter is not arguing Christian doctrine, he is using the devil as a symbol of how it works in the world and that we need to have our guards up because evil will be disguised and may not appear as obvious to us. This was analyzed from the lines â€Å"I watched with glee, while your kings and queens fought for ten decades for the gods they made.† Now I will discuss the music, the different sections, and how they evolve throughout the song. The track begins with a beat on one drum, and then congas are added as accents to the last beats of the line. Other instruments join in and it sounds like a jungle beat with Jagger howling in the background like a wolf, giving the impression of being in a dark jungle. As the beat continues, piano is introduced with a slow series of chords. This is when Jagger beings by singing: â€Å"please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste.† After the first four lines bass starts and it builds on the drum mix still going on in the background. The bass makes the song sound angry, and the bass doesn’t play a repetitive riff it seems to be improvised or played randomly. The first verse and chorus end with the pianist playing at an even pace, but when the second verse begins he starts playing faster and more frantic. The sound of the instruments matches the lyrics of the song, singing about overthrowing government and the blitzkrieg. At the third verse we can hear background vocals singing at the end of each line. These vocals add an eerie sound to the rhythmic instruments, and Jagger’s voice begins to crack on every word. The fourth verse is a guitar solo by Keith Richards and is not really following the beat. He goes from note to note, sliding his fingers across the strings, producing a noticeable sound and then a note is held for several beats. The guitar represents the character that is portrayed in the lyrics, unpredictable. After the guitar solo we hear the chorus, followed by another verse and the chorus again. All of the instruments are played together now and it all seems to be improvised, with no recognizable rhythm. The guitar and vocals play off each other nicely and then Jagger says: â€Å"can you guess my name?† referring to the devil. Finally the song fades away to an end. When I watched a live video of The Rolling Stones performing this song I noticed how into it the whole crowd was. â€Å"Sympathy For The Devil† is sort of like an anti-war anthem for people. The whole stage was lit up in red with lights and there was fog on the stage as well to add more emotion to the song. In 2003, The Stones released this as a maxi-single, with 4 versions of the song. The original was there, as well as remixes by The Neptunes, Fatboy Slim, and Full Phatt. The industrial band Laibach released an entire album containing different covers of this song. The character and tone of the covers are largely very different from the Stones’ version. In the opening track the lead singer sings/shouts in a very deep bass voice with a thick Slavic accent. One of their covers contains references to the violence at the Altamont raceway. In 1969 a fan was fatally stabbed during a performance of this song and they didn’t play it live for 7 years because of this.

Placebo Effect :: essays research papers

The Placebo Effect   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The activity I chose to write about was on Dr. Walter A. Brown’s article in Scientific American about placebos and their effect on the patients. His article described what a placebo is and if it is ethical for doctors to prescribe this “treatment'; to their patients.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Dr. Brown, who is a psychologist at Brown University, decided to do a study on the effects of a placebo. A placebo is any treatment or drug with no medicinal value that is given to a patient to relieve symptoms of an ailment. His hypothesis in the article focused on if the placebos had any effect on the patients who took them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To test his hypothesis, Dr. Brown and his colleagues performed experiments on patients who had depression. To test his idea, he employed what is known as the “double blind technique.'; This type of experimentation involves that neither the doctors nor the patients know if they are receiving the real “stuff'; or simply sugar pills (placebos). Only the experimenters know who gets what. What this supposedly does is that the patient will mentally think that the doctor is giving him/her the real drug and they will soon be feeling better. When in reality, it is themselves, not the medicine, which makes them feel better. These are the findings of Dr. Brown.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In his experiments on the placebos, he found that the placebo can make a person feel better, but it can also have no effect what-so-ever. In his study of the depressed patients, about 50% of the subjects with normal levels of cortisone benefited from the placebo, whereas, only about 35% of the depressed patients benefited from the drug. This led Dr. Brown to realize that there are other factors in treating depression. He found that the persons with short-term depression responded more favorably to the placebo than those with long-term depression.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Other doctors also performed “placebo experiments'; to realize if it really works. One example would be of the experiments led by Edmunds G. Diamond of the University of Kansas Medical Center in the 1950’s. His research involved the surgery to treat angina pectoris. He had a set of 18 patients suffering from this ailment have common surgery to relieve this symptom. In 13 of the patients, the doctors actually performed the operation, however in the other five, all they did was make an incision in the chest and sew it back up.

The Silver Linings Playbook Chapter 11

Filled with Molten Lava The picture I have of Nikki is a head shot, and I wish I had told her how much I liked it. She paid a professional photographer to take the photo, and she actually had her hair and makeup done at the local salon before going to the shoot; plus she also went to the tanning booths the week before the picture was taken, since my birthday is in late December and the picture was my twenty-eighth-birthday present. Nikki's head is turned so you see more of her left cheek than you do her right, which is outlined by her strawberry blond curly hair. You can see her left ear, and she is wearing the dangling diamond earrings I gave her for our first wedding anniversary. She had gone to the tanning booths just to bring out the freckles on her nose, which I love and miss every winter. You can see the little freckles clearly in the shot, and Nikki said this was the main idea and she even told the photographer to make the freckles the focal point because I love her seasonal freckles best. Her face is sort of like an upside-down triangle, as her chin is sort of pointy. Her nose is like the nose of a lioness, long and regal-looking, and her eyes are the color of grass. In the picture she is making that pouting face I love – not quite a smile, not quite a smirk – and her lips are so glossy that I can't resist kissing the picture every time I look at it. So I kiss the picture again, feeling the cold flatness of the glass, leaving a kiss-shaped smudge, which I wipe away with my shirt. â€Å"God, I miss you so much, Nikki,† I say, but the picture is silent, like always. â€Å"I'm sorry that I did not originally like this picture, because you would not believe how much I like it now. I know that I told you this was not such a great present, back before I started practicing being kind rather than right. Yes, I had specifically asked for a new barbecue, but I'm glad that I have the picture now, because it helped me get through all that time in the bad place and made me want to be a better person, and I'm changed now, so I not only realize but appreciate that you put a lot of thought and effort into this present. It's the only likeness I have of you since some bad person stole all the pictures of us that were in my mother's house – because the pictures were in expensive frames, and – â€Å" Suddenly, for some reason, I remember that there's a video of our wedding, and in this video Nikki is walking and dancing and speaking, and there's even this one part where Nikki talks directly into the camera as if she were talking to me, and she says, â€Å"I love you, Pat Peoples, you sexy stud muffin,† which made me laugh so hard the first time we watched the video with her parents. I knock on my parents' bedroom door, and then I knock again. â€Å"Pat?† my mom says. â€Å"I have to work in the morning, you know?† my father says, but I ignore him. â€Å"Mom?† I say to the door. â€Å"What is it?† â€Å"Where's my wedding video?† There is a silence. â€Å"You remember my wedding video, right?† Still, she does not say anything. â€Å"Is it in the cardboard box in the family-room closet with all the other videos?† Through the door I hear her and my father whispering, and then my mother says, â€Å"I think we gave you our copy of the video, honey. It must be in your old house. Sorry.† â€Å"What? No, it's downstairs in the family-room closet. Never mind, I'll find it myself. Good night,† I say, but when I get to the family-room closet and go through the box of videos, it's not there. I turn around and see that my mother has followed me down into the family room. She is in her nightgown. She is biting her nails. â€Å"Where is it?† â€Å"We gave it to – â€Å" â€Å"Don't lie to me!† â€Å"We must have misplaced it, but it's sure to turn up sooner or later.† â€Å"Misplaced it? It's irreplaceable!† It's just a videocassette, but I can't help feeling angry, which I realize is one of my problems. â€Å"How could you lose it when you know how important it is to me? How?† â€Å"Calm down, Pat.† My mother raises her palms so they are both in front of her chest and then takes a careful step toward me, as if she is trying to sneak up on a rabid dog. â€Å"Relax, Pat. Just relax.† But I can feel myself getting more and more angry, so before I say or do anything dumb, I remember that I am close to being sent back to the bad place, where Nikki will never find me. I storm past my mother, go down into the basement, and do five hundred sit-ups on the Stomach Master 6000. When I finish, I am still angry, so I ride the stationary bike for forty-five minutes and then do shots of water until I feel hydrated enough to attempt five hundred push-ups. Only when my pecs feel like they are filled with molten lava do I deem myself calm enough to sleep. When I go upstairs, all is quiet and no light is leaking out from under my parents' bedroom door, so I grab my framed picture of Nikki, take her upstairs to the attic, turn off the ventilation fan, slip into my sleeping bag, set up Nikki next to my head, kiss her good night – and then begin to sweat away some more pounds. I haven't been up in the attic since the last time Kenny G visited me. I am afraid he will come back, but I also feel sort of fat. I close my eyes, hum a single note, silently count to ten over and over again, and the next morning I wake up unscathed.

Global Health Disparities Free Essay Example, 3000 words

Health officials, as well as relevant Civil Society Organizations (CSO s), are at the center of providing social empowerment especially in fragile states that have an arrested development (Commins, 2010). In that light, Health officials can come up with processes that contribute to social mobilization, finance mechanisms that boost community participation as well as devise various strategies pertaining in law, communication, the organization itself as well as in media that make it accountable for actions partaken by them. On the other hand, the civil society can offer liaison with the relevant leaders nationally or internationally in a bid to enhance political support for social action. CSO s can also ensure that they wipe out inequalities in health care and they also offer oversight to Health systems. CSO s are also tasked with the creation of capacity for societies so that they can be able to take part in the rather bureaucratic processes in health care. Creation of universal co verage is yet the other element of strengthening Health systems (Save the Children, 2012). Therefore, there should be the mobilization of more resources so as to fund health services through taxation and ensuring that corruption in handling such finances is eliminated.
